“八卦”一词其实是有多种含义，不过现在更经常被用来指代流言蜚语或是闲言碎语。其实“八卦”还有一个意思就是*古代的基本哲学观念，用于反映了古人对现实世界的朴素认识，英语可以把它翻译为“the Eight Trigrams”或“the Eight Hexagrams”。

然而，现在更经常使用的含义是流言蜚语，也就是gossip: conversation about unimportant subjects, especially people’s private lives.

另外，gossip除了“八卦新闻”的意思之外还有“爱闲聊的人,八卦的人,好嚼舌的人”。sb. who habitually discusses the personal details of others' lives. 以及作动词时还有“说长道短”的意思，(to spread rumours or tell people the personal details of others' lives, especially maliciously) 英语可以翻译为“to be gossipy ”或“to be fond of gossip. 常见的用词还有指娱乐界的花边新闻，翻译成英文就是“entertainment gossip”.
