Lang Lang was born in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. His father Lang Guoren is a musician, who plays the traditional Chinese stringed instrument erhu. When he was two years old, Lang watched the Tom and Jerry episode The Cat Concerto which features the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt. According to Lang, this first contact with Western music is what motivated him to learn the piano. He began piano lessons with Professor Zhu Ya-Fen at age three. At the age of five, he performed his first public recital and won first place at the Shenyang Piano Competition, which marks the beginning of his music career.

Later, he entered Beijing’s Central Music Conservatory aged nine, but was expelled from his piano tutor's studio for "lack of talent”. However, his piano tutor would have never believed that he expelled one of the most talented young pianists around the world. Being first place at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musicians’ Competition and playing the complete Chopin Etudes at the Beijing Concert Hall at 13, he left for America the following year.He began studies with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He worked extremely hard with passion, and when his moment came, he was ready.

That moment happened when, aged 17, he was called upon to make a dramatic last-minute substitution for the famous Andre Watts to perform in the “Gala Of The Century”, playing a Tchaikovsky concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It made him what journalists like to call an “overnight star” and the world’s finest concert halls quickly beckoned.
